The Department of National Defence (DND) of Canada has confirmed that the Canadian Armed Forces are actively tracking the movements of a Russian fleet that recently reached Cuban waters. This fleet includes the Kazan nuclear submarine, which arrived at the port of Havana on June 12, 2024. The Russian naval presence in the Caribbean is ahead of planned military exercises in the region.
DND confirms Canadian Armed Forces tracking Russian warships near Cuba
A spokesperson from the DND stated that the Canadian Armed Forces, in collaboration with U.S. counterparts, routinely conducts operations to support continental defense missions. Currently, a Royal Canadian Air Force CP-140 Aurora aircraft and the HMCS Ville de Quebec are monitoring the activities of the Russian flotilla.
The arrival of the Russian fleet in Cuba, consisting of a nuclear-powered submarine, an oil tanker, and a rescue tug, follows their drills in the Atlantic Ocean. This movement highlights the longstanding alliance between Russia and Cuba, a relationship that has persisted since the Cuban revolution in the late 1950s.
The Canadian Armed Forces' monitoring of the Russian fleet is part of their mandate to defend North America and ensure the security of its maritime approaches.
